Liver Cancer

Advanced Liver Cancer Care with Surgical, Robotic & Transplant Expertise

Overview

Liver cancer is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease that begins in the liver—a vital organ responsible for filtering toxins, producing bile, and metabolizing nutrients. The most common form is Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), which often develops in the background of chronic liver disease or cirrhosis.

Types of Liver Cancer

  • Primary Liver Cancer (originating in the liver)
    • Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) – Most common
    • Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma
    • Hepatoblastoma (rare, mostly in children)
  • Secondary (Metastatic) Liver Cancer
    • Spread from other organs such as the colon, stomach, or breast

Risk Factors

  • Chronic hepatitis B or C infection
  • Cirrhosis (from alcohol, fatty liver disease, etc.)
  • Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
  • Long-term alcohol abuse
  • Aflatoxin exposure
  • Hemochromatosis and other metabolic liver diseases
  • Family history of liver cancer

Symptoms

Liver cancer often develops silently and symptoms may only appear in advanced stages:

  • Right upper abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Loss of appetite or early satiety
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
  • Abdominal swelling (ascites)
  • Fever or liver enlargement

Anyone with liver disease, cirrhosis, or hepatitis should undergo regular screening for liver cancer.

Diagnosis

Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for treatment planning:

  • Liver Function Tests (LFTs)
  • Tumor markers – Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP)
  • Ultrasound / Triphasic CT scan / MRI
  • PET scan – To assess spread
  • Liver biopsy – Only in selected cases
  • FibroScan / Elastography – To assess liver stiffness and fibrosis
