Acute Small & Large Bowel Obstruction

Acute Small & Large Bowel Obstruction

Timely Diagnosis and Surgical Expertise Can Save Lives

What Is Bowel Obstruction?

An acute bowel obstruction occurs when there is a sudden blockage in either the small intestine or large intestine (colon), preventing the normal movement of food, fluids, and gas through the digestive tract. It is a surgical emergency that, if left untreated, can lead to bowel ischemia, perforation, and serious infection.

Types of Bowel Obstruction

  • Small Bowel Obstruction (SBO): Often caused by adhesions, hernias, or Crohn’s disease
  • Large Bowel Obstruction (LBO): Commonly due to tumors, volvulus, or strictures

Common Causes

Small Bowel Obstruction:

  • Post-surgical adhesions (scar tissue)
  • Hernias (strangulated or obstructed)
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g., Crohn’s disease)
  • Intussusception (in children and sometimes adults)
  • Foreign bodies or bezoars

Large Bowel Obstruction:

  • Colorectal cancer
  • Volvulus (twisting of the bowel)
  • Diverticulitis with stricture
  • Fecal impaction
  • Post-radiation fibrosis

Symptoms of Acute Bowel Obstruction

  • Severe abdominal pain and cramping
  • Bloating and distension
  • Nausea and vomiting (more common in small bowel obstruction)
  • Constipation or inability to pass gas/stool
  • High-pitched or absent bowel sounds
  • Signs of dehydration or infection (fever, rapid heartbeat)

If you experience sudden abdominal symptoms, seek emergency care immediately. Delay can lead to bowel gangrene or sepsis.

Diagnosis

Accurate diagnosis is critical and may include:

  • Physical examination (abdominal distension, tenderness)
  • X-rays of the abdomen (air-fluid levels, dilated loops)
  • CT Scan Abdomen (most definitive test)
  • Ultrasound (especially useful in children and early obstructions)
  • Blood tests to assess for infection, electrolyte imbalance
