Esophageal Cancer

Advanced Diagnosis & Surgical Treatment for Cancer of the Food Pipe

What Is Esophageal Cancer?

Esophageal cancer is a malignant tumor that forms in the esophagus—the muscular tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. It is a serious but treatable condition, especially when detected early and managed by experienced specialists using advanced surgical and oncological techniques.

Types of Esophageal Cancer

  • Adenocarcinoma: Often linked to chronic acid reflux and Barrett’s esophagus; more common in the lower esophagus
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Typically affects the middle or upper esophagus and associated with smoking, alcohol, or dietary factors

Risk Factors

  • Chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Barrett’s esophagus
  • Smoking and heavy alcohol use
  • Obesity
  • Poor diet low in fruits and vegetables
  • Family history of esophageal or gastric cancer
  • Achalasia (a condition affecting swallowing)

Symptoms of Esophageal Cancer

Symptoms may be mild at first but progress as the disease advances:

  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)—initially with solids, later with liquids
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Persistent heartburn or indigestion
  • Coughing or hoarseness
  • Vomiting or blood in stool (in advanced cases)

If you experience difficulty swallowing or ongoing reflux symptoms, seek evaluation early.

Diagnostic Tests

  • Upper GI Endoscopy with Biopsy – Gold standard for confirming cancer
  • Barium swallow X-ray – Shows narrowing or blockage
  • CT scan / PET scan – To assess spread (staging)
  • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) – Determines depth of invasion and lymph node involvement
  • Laparoscopy/thoracoscopy – In select advanced cases

Staging & Treatment Planning

Treatment is based on the stage, tumor location, patient health, and overall goals (curative vs. palliative):

  • Stage 0–I: Early stage, confined to the inner lining
  • Stage II–III: Locally advanced disease, possibly involving nearby lymph nodes
  • Stage IV: Metastatic disease, spread to distant organs
