Diaphragmatic Hernia

Diaphragmatic Hernia

Expert Diagnosis & Surgical Care for Diaphragm Disorders

What Is a Diaphragmatic Hernia?

A diaphragmatic hernia occurs when abdominal organs move into the chest cavity through an abnormal opening in the diaphragm — the muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen. This condition can be congenital (present at birth) or acquired due to trauma, surgery, or long-standing intra-abdominal pressure.

Types of Diaphragmatic Hernias

  • Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) – Found in newborns; typically needs urgent surgical repair
  • Hiatal Hernia – Part of the stomach herniates into the chest through the esophageal opening
  • Traumatic Diaphragmatic Hernia – Caused by blunt or penetrating injury
  • Iatrogenic Hernia – Occurs after surgical procedures involving the abdomen or chest

Symptoms of Diaphragmatic Hernia

Symptoms can vary depending on the size and type of hernia:

  • Shortness of breath or chest discomfort
  • Abdominal pain or bloating
  • Difficulty swallowing or acid reflux
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or indigestion
  • In severe cases: cyanosis (bluish skin), especially in newborns

Large or strangulated hernias can compress the lungs or trap organs, requiring immediate medical attention.
