Pancreas Cancer

Pancreas Cancer

Specialized Surgical Care for One of the Most Challenging GI Cancers

Overview

Pancreatic cancer is a malignant tumor that originates in the tissues of the pancreas — an organ responsible for producing digestive enzymes and insulin. It is known for its aggressive nature and subtle early symptoms, often making timely diagnosis and expert surgical intervention crucial.

Types of Pancreatic Cancer

  • Exocrine Tumors (most common)
    • Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma
    • Acinar cell carcinoma
    • Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (less common)
  • Endocrine Tumors
    • Originating from hormone-producing cells
    • Often slower-growing but still serious

Risk Factors

  • Family history of pancreatic cancer
  • Chronic pancreatitis
  • Diabetes (especially new-onset in older adults)
  • Smoking and heavy alcohol use
  • Obesity
  • Genetic syndromes (BRCA, Lynch syndrome)

Symptoms

Pancreatic cancer often does not show symptoms until it is advanced. Common signs include:

  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes)
  • Upper abdominal or back pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dark urine and pale stools
  • New or worsening diabetes
  • Fatigue and indigestion

If you are experiencing multiple symptoms or have chronic pancreatitis, early screening is highly recommended.

Diagnosis

A thorough diagnostic approach is essential for effective treatment planning:

  • Blood tests – Including tumor marker CA 19-9
  • Ultrasound or EUS (Endoscopic Ultrasound)
  • CT Scan / MRI – For tumor localization and staging
  • MRCP / ERCP – To evaluate bile and pancreatic ducts
  • Biopsy – Often done through EUS-guided fine-needle aspiration

Staging

Staging helps determine whether the cancer is:

  • Resectable – Can be surgically removed
  • Borderline Resectable – May need chemo before surgery
  • Locally Advanced or Metastatic – Spread beyond surgical limits
