Ventral & Umbilical Hernia

Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic Repair for Abdominal Wall Hernias

What Is a Ventral or Umbilical Hernia?

A ventral hernia occurs when tissues or organs push through a weak spot in the abdominal wall, while an umbilical hernia specifically occurs near the navel (belly button). These hernias may be present at birth or develop later due to surgery, pregnancy, obesity, or abdominal strain.

Common Causes

  • Previous abdominal surgery (incisional hernia)
  • Obesity or rapid weight gain
  • Chronic coughing or straining
  • Heavy lifting
  • Pregnancy or childbirth
  • Congenital weakness (especially in umbilical hernias)

Symptoms of Ventral or Umbilical Hernia

  • Visible bulge or swelling in the abdomen or near the belly button
  • Pain or discomfort, especially when coughing, lifting, or standing
  • Heaviness or pressure in the abdominal area
  • Redness or tenderness (in case of infection or strangulation)
  • Nausea or vomiting (in severe, obstructed cases)

If the bulge becomes painful, non-reducible, or discolored, it may indicate a strangulated hernia—a medical emergency that needs immediate surgery.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is primarily clinical and may be confirmed through:

  • Physical examination
  • Ultrasound abdomen
  • CT scan or MRI (especially for incisional or large ventral hernias)
